Do the labels shounen/sienen even matter?

I always thought they seperated more child friendly anime/manga to more explicit/adult ones.

But then you have an light hearted anime like K-on which is considered sienen, and really violent ones like Aot which are Shounen.

Makes me the think the label is useless tbh

You can kinda find out which is which by different tropes and such.

Usually it’s whatever magazine it was in that it is considered.

I believe K-on was in a Seinen magazine even though my little sister watches it lol, along with my neighbors the yamahas lol.

You can’t divide EVERYTHING into either/or but it’s a general rule of thumb.

there overlap obviously with some stuff like AOT which is in a Shounen magazine but is like a light Seinen

Having furigana over the kanji, having gore or NSFW stuff (excluding sexual themes) and more light hearted adventure things are an easy way to tell

They exist for Tv in Japan I assume so they can know what to expect to watch and in magazines so they would know the age group it is for. Though many anime fit in their category many overlap.

An example of seinen, would be Berserk.

It´s easy to spot the difference between the two once you watch them lol
